When you are faced with a dilemma or a hard decision to make you may freeze or want to stick your head in the sand until it all blows over. When you do this you are deciding to do nothing and leave yourself open to a wider range of consequences.
Not making decisions for yourself can leave you feeling helpless and out of control. Some decisions may seem harder to make however having confidence in oneself is important (Ironside 1999). Believing that you are able to make good decisions will enable you to follow through with your choice .
Why do people struggle to make decisions?
Being anxious about the consequence of ones action can make it difficult to take the leap into the unknown. Fear of disappointing someone else or past feelings of guilt may resurface, making the situation seem impossible.
Having to make a decision under pressure can intensify feelings of uncertainty and send an individual into panic mode. When this happens positive feelings associated with decisions that had pleasurable outcomes, are deminished.
Someone suffering from depression will find it more difficult to make a choice because often it is harder for them to take action (Barron 2014).
How to decide
1. Flipping a coin creates some certainty. In the moment of doing this the answer may come to you and if it doesn't, a definitive answer is provided when you see which side faces up.
2. Write down the options open to you and set yourself a time limit. You must make a choice within that time. Feel assured that you have made the best decision possible with the information that you have and move onto something else.
3. Write a pro and cons list and go with whichever side seems most favourable.
4. If you suffer from depression Cognitive Behavioural Therapy will help you to make informed choices with more clarity (Barron 2014).
